Back Events Near Me » A Master Series Concert: The Music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Vol. 2 @ HCMC Conservatory of Music

“...a benevolent god to whom all musicians should offer a prayer to defend themselves against mediocrity” - such was the reverence Claude Debussy held for Johann Sebastian Bach. Indeed, through Debussy’s lens, Bach’s music embodies eternity: on every manuscript page, we encounter a pristine freshness, ranging from sinuous, enchanting melodic lines to profound and intense religious fervor.

This immortal spirit constitutes the very soul of A Master Series Concert: The Music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Vol. 2. The audience will be immersed in the Concerto in D minor for 2 Violins (BWV 1043R), arranged for Violin and Viola, where the interplay between Violin and Viola transcends the strict rules of counterpoint to soar with a newly premiered Cadenza - a vivid testament to the contemporary vitality and timeless beauty of Bach’s music. Following this, performing for the first time in Vietnam, the Concerto in A minor for Flute, Violin and Piano (BWV 1044) will weave a polychromatic sonic tapestry, blending the purity of the Flute, the brilliance of the Violin, and the majestic solidity of the Piano.

The second half of the concert opens a contemplative space with the Concerto in C minor for 2 Pianos (BWV 1060) - a profound, philosophical dialogue between the two soloists and the orchestra. Concluding this journey through heritage is the Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor (BWV 1067), performed in its original instrumentation featuring the classic union of Flute, Strings and Continuo.

The program brings together distinguished artists: Prof. Dr. Terri Sundberg (flute), Prof. Dr. Chuong Vu (violin), Tran Hoang Yen (viola), Nguyen Thuy Yen (piano), Pham Nguyen Anh Vu (piano), and Pham Nguyen Hoai Trang (piano), alongside guest artists and the Vietnam Classical Players under the baton of Meritorious Artist Tran Vuong Thach and guest concertmaster Tang Thanh Nam.

This concert is co-organized by Saigon Classical and Saigon Chamber Music Society, with the cherished companionship of HCMC Conservatory of Music, UNT College of Music, Bechstein Vietnam, Vietnam Connection Music Festival (VNCMF), International Chamber Players (ICP), Joy Foundation & Morico.

We invite you to join us in turning back the pages of time, to discover and resonate with these musical legacies from three centuries ago, and to witness that Bach remains ever-present, magnificent, and benevolent.
