We returned to Bến Tre during a period of prolonged heat. Under the intense May sun, a team of anthropologists, architects, botanists, and ecology researchers came together to conduct a field survey on “local knowledge.”
Through conversations with local residents, we began to understand how they organize their lives in harmonious relationship with water, soil, plants, and insects. We also observed the community’s enduring ability to adapt to the constant transformations of both the environment and society.
Drawing from materials and reflections still fresh from the fieldwork, we invite you to join the survey team in a discussion about the uniquely fascinating land of Bến Tre. From houses, gardens, and rivers to monsoon winds, saltwater intrusion, and insects, we will reflect together on the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature within a constantly shifting landscape.
“Updates from the Field” aims to spark interest in fieldwork as a method of data collection, while opening discussions about methodology and experience through a spirit of multidisciplinary and multidirectional exchange.
For each session, we will invite a guest commentator. This may be a researcher, a practitioner working in a related field or topic, or local people whom we met during the journey.
