Lacquer reaction is a visceral nightmare.
Burning, swollen, and painfully inflamed hands. It confronts the practitioner directly on their own flesh.
Vietnamese lacquer art originates from raw sap (son ta) turbid, pungent, and intensely reactive to the human body. To reach beauty, practitioners must courageously endure physical agony, maintaining a quiet mind to soothe and subdue the material’s initial rejection.
It is precisely the magic of this harsh transformation turning a toxic resin into a profound, vibrant aesthetic value that defines the soul of lacquer art: The most authentic beauty is always bought with courage and total dedication.
The Confluence exhibition is a confluence of distinct perspectives, where 20 figures from diverse fields engage in an enduring dialogue with Vietnamese lacquer to create a vibrant stream of artistic energy.
