From the organizer: Join us on Thursday 23 March, 2017 for a Khmer Art talk by Jean-Michel Filippi
Despite the global fame of the magnificent temples of Angkor, Khmer art is still poorly known.
In his return to The Old Compass Cafe, Professor Filippi will provide a background and understanding of Khmer art as it appears in temples, lintels and above all statues at Angkor and elsewhere in Cambodia. We will examine the relationship between Khmer statues and their Indian models, the various styles and the amazingly quick pace of stylistic development.
Far from being a mere description of forms, this lecture is an invitation to a better understanding of art and Khmer history.
Corsican born Jean-Michel Filippi is Professor of Khmer Linguistics at the Royal University of Phnom Penh and is a leading scholar of Cambodian languages. He completed his Phd at the Sorbonne in Paris. His decade long fascination with Cambodia reaches into the country’s extraordinary history, art and architecture.
He is the author of the book Strolling around Phnom Penh, and is a passionate speaker. For more information about Dr. Jean-Michel, please check out www.kampotmuseum.wordpress
