From the organizer: This lecture will chart the historical and contemporary relationship between African American and Vietnamese people.
It will trace efforts by African American activists to reach out to the Vietnamese government in the 1960’s as well as their work in Vietnam. In addition, it will discuss coalitions between Vietnamese Americans in the diaspora and Black communities in the United States during this time and beyond as a part of wider efforts for equality. Also, it will examine and challenge some of the obstacles to this relationship; such as colorism, nativism and anti-Black racism.
