“Our philosophy is about creating experiences. Resorts that succeed are so much more than a place to stay; we want to create that journey and lasting memories close to nature. Time is finite so every minute is precious!” explains David Ashworth, the new GM for Green Bay Phu Quoc Resort and Spa.

David Aswhorth - General Manager of Green Bay Phu Quoc Resort & Spa

David’s arrival late last year coincides with an exciting time for the resort that prides itself on peaceful moments surrounded by nature. Open since 2017, this eco-friendly beach resort on the Northwest Phu Quoc has recently added a new twist in luxury to its accommodation, while remaining true to its rustic charm.

Subtle elegance in tune with nature has long been a priority in David's career. Before joining Greenbay Phu Quoc he spent the past years with the Zannier Hotel Group, developing and successfully launching a series of prestigious 5-star resorts, including one of Saigoneer’s favorites Zannier Hotels Bãi San Hô in Phú Yên. He previously worked at resorts around the world, including in Thailand, Singapore, Barbados, West Indies, and England. He brings this experience to the launching of the Beachfront Pool Villas.

Since its debut, Green Bay Phu Quoc has offered serene villas with private pools surrounded by vegetation that create a secluded feel with awe-inspiring views of the placid sea. The new Beachfront Pool Villas combines the best of both of these while revealing a reverence for nature and local design. As David explains, “We have created a sense of place an emotional journey, close to the ocean, yet cushioned by nature; a quiet place to re-connect with loved ones, a cocoon of warmth, soft furnishings, vibrant yet subtle colors that seduce you into calmness.”

The views of the ocean at sunrise and sunset and the ability to step out from one’s room to the pristine beach speak for themselves. The subtle design, however, deserves greater explanation. A 100% in-house, local team designed all the decor and furniture. The wardrobes, curtains, cushions, chairs, doors, desks, and even picture frames and floating pool trays were made in the resort’s workshop. Local traditions and craftsmanship allowed the sustainable, local materials to impart a warm, comfortable atmosphere that exudes intelligent luxury. Black and white photos of Phú Quốc’s idyllic past along with decorative fishing equipment and household objects ensure such a dwelling could exist nowhere else in the world.

When constructing the resort, the designers were mindful of removing as little vegetation as possible to not only establish an authentic and endemic sense of nature but also preserve the precious ecosystem. Moreover, fifty percent of the materials used in the new villas and across the resort are recycled from the on-site trees that had to be taken down and nearby construction. This emphasis on preservation is observed in the rustic aesthetics that forefront nature’s timeless beauty. Bright recycled wood, clean stones, and understated color allow the island’s inherent charm to shine.

As luxury resorts populate Vietnam in general and Phú Quốc in particular, guests increasingly hunger for a place that feels different and has a soul that cannot simply be purchased and planned by a team of investors. A setting filled with trees, bird songs, flowers, and kindness crafted with local knowledge and materials seems an answer to this craving. Green Bay Phu Quoc Resort and Spa’s new Beachfront Pool Villas stand as evidence that the most luxurious resorts may be those that allow one to comfortably wander into nature.
