From the organizer: Organised by Psychology of Empowerment. Hosted by The Fitness village.
Join us in the third of a 4-part series presented by Douglas Holwerda, a Hanoi based psychotherapist. The purpose of these talks is to increase awareness of basic principles used in psychotherapy that can help an individual to better know themselves, how they relate to others and to find their place in the world. Note that each lecture is completely stand-alone, talking about different subjects. No need to commit to all 4!
Lecture Three - The World We Live In
In the first two lectures we dealt with how a person can be empowered by gaining awareness of aspects of their inner life. Regulating emotions, understanding the limitations of will and the value of acceptance, knowing how negative judgement results from aligning our expectations with our ideals rather than the realities of life and gaining empowerment by understanding boundaries and living from the inside out.
Lecture 3 will take place as an interview format and moves the focus from our inner world to the world we live in. Contemporary times create subliminal challenges that many of us do not fully realise. One topic that has many ramifications that influence each of us is the rate of change. While it is difficult to measure the effects change has on each of us, we will consider some of the impacts that we are better off knowing about.
We will also explore the effects of performance and image, two of the preoccupations of today's world, and how they are dangerous substitutes for knowing and valuing the essential self.
We will also explore the difference between victimisation and victimhood to understand better how limitations can move from external to internal.
Is the future ominous? What does it mean to live in a world that is unsustainable in the way that it currently functions? What are ways that we can prepare ourselves and our children for the world we live in and find peace within the context of uncertainty and social vulnerability?
