A Night Concert "The Four Seasons" @ Saigon Opera House

From the organizer: HBSO would like to present the remarkable virtuosity of the veteran violinist Stephane Tran Ngoc through the two performances, Four Seasons by A. Vivaldi and Distant Light by Pēteris Vasks, in the evening of July 19th, accompanied by HBSO Orchestra with conductor Tran Vuong Thach.

Composed in 1723 and ever since, Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons considered one of the most daring works from the Baroque Period, The Four Seasons is complete concertos individually, yet when put together they make a perfect unison, like the unseparatedness of the seasons.

Spring as vivid, elegant with nature’s whisperings, Summer as peaceful songs under the sun, as sudden, powerful tornadoes representing the infinite power of Nature, Autumn as delightful, emotional outbursts yet not without sorrowful, yearning tunes, and Winter as quiet as a lurking wind, singing of an endless journey, occasionally rioting.

Violin Concerto Distant Light (Tala gatisma in Vasks’ original Latvian), composed in 1996–7 at the request of Gidon Kremer when he read Kremer’s book Childhood Fragments he realized they had gone to the same school: ‘But we have only really met now in music. Distant Light is nostalgia with a touch of tragedy. Childhood memories, but also the glittering stars millions of light years away.
