In an effort to shine a light on the cultural awakening happening in Vietnam right now, Worldwide Vibe platforms a series of DJs and music collectives who are redefining the country’s musical identity.

If we rewind to before the pandemic, underground artists in Vietnam were stuck in a cycle that tended to undermine local acts but bolster foreign, touring DJs. The good news is, this has recently changed.

Vietnam’s efforts to contain COVID-19 were some of the strictest in the region, but the silver lining was that it leveled the playing field for local artists.

Collectives like Nhac Gãy, the Beats Saigon, and club Piu Piu are driving a musical movement that reclaims the sounds or spaces of their cities and rebels against the former Western monopoly on their nightlife.

An integral part of this cultural shift is online platforms and creator tools like Mixcloud. With a shortage of in-person spaces dedicated to niche scenes like the hardcore rave scene, experimental noise, or LGBTQ+ focused spaces, artists have utilized streaming platforms to share their love of music.

On Mixcloud alone, we’ve watched as Vinahouse (a mainstream genre that amps ballads and local hits to 140 bpm) explode on our platform with a daily average of 4359 hours streamed from Vietnamese creators.

Worldwide Vibe Vietnam is a celebration of Vietnamese creators, their innovation, creativity, and dedication to sharing music. The hyper-localized programming at Saigon and Hanoi Community Radio or the fundraisers initiated by Nhạc Gãy is exemplary of this scene’s diversity and resourcefulness.
