Choreographer George Balanchine and composer Igor Stravinsky were ground-breaking 20th-century artists whose collaboration deeply influenced each of them. Both men were innovators, risk takers, and are widely considered masters of their art forms whose works have endured the test of time.

Apollo, Balanchine’s first collaboration with composer Igor Stravinsky in 1928, remains a masterpiece of neoclassicism in its striking depiction of the young god of music and his three muses. This production is presented by Royal Ballet dancers of Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

Serenade (1935) was the first ballet created by the Russian choreographer in the U.S for his new company New York City Ballet. It combines brilliant dance, tempo and freedom to the romantic music of Pyotr Tchaikovsky – and the fluttering of 26 dancers. In the middle section, there is the presence of “three women and a man” by the dancers; although Balanchine liked to deny that his ballets were ‘about’ anything, some believe that Serenade revolves around a man and the three women in his life: his wife, his mistress and the one that got away. This production is presented by dancers of Den Norske Opera & Ballett (The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet)The third and final piece of this mixed bill is The Seasons’ Canon by Crystal Pite created for Paris Opera Ballet, premiered in 2016.

Set on Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi – The Four Seasons, the ballet is in the form of a primitive ritual. It is 21st century post-minimalist, drawing its inspiration from mineral life and an idealized state of nature. Its four tableaux capture the essence of life, with its unalterable seasons, from dawning to fading light, birth and death. The dancers form as a single moving body, constantly moving from order to disorder. A huge cell that breathes, divides, sometimes explodes in all directions and then reforms. Its pulsing energy comes from the bowels of the earth and the human being feels irremediably vulnerable, at the mercy of larger-than-life forces.
