About Prof. Dr. Laurens Patzlaff
Laurens Patzlaff (born 1981 near Stuttgart) is a German pianist, improviser, and educator. Following the release of his debut album Reflections on Debussy (2012), Deutschlandfunk described him as a “master of the art of improvisation.”
After graduating with distinction from the music academies of Stuttgart and Madrid, he has performed internationally, including at the Wiener Musikverein and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Since 2008, piano improvisation has been central to his artistic and pedagogical work. In 2024, he was appointed Professor of Piano Improvisation and Applied Piano at the Freiburg University of Music at the age of 30.
Improvisation has shaped Patzlaff’s artistic path from an early age. Alongside the classical piano repertoire, he explores stylistic and free improvisation as well as jazz. He views the piano as an interdisciplinary instrument and embraces a holistic understanding of music.
