INTRODUCTION TO THE EXHIBITION “THIÊN DI”

IN THE EVER-CHANGING FLOW OF "THIÊN DI"

Everything in the universe moves through an endless cycle of becoming, flourishing, fading, and taking new forms. Every fragment of reality is a singular existence: something that had barely begun to take shape moments ago may, in an instant, dissolve into the vastness of nothingness, making way for another form to emerge.

Yet this fleetingness does not render the world meaningless, nor does it leave us helpless before the impermanence of all things. Standing within the ever-changing flow of “Thien Di” – the continual transformation of nature and the world, the exhibition poses a question about the way we exist within the universe: when we slow our gaze and quiet our minds, can we touch the beauty held within fleeting moments, where their very impermanence becomes a reason to cherish the present?

On October 10, 2026, Noirfoto Gallery officially presents “Thiên Di”, Cas’s first solo exhibition, to the public. At its heart is a simple yet profound reminder: no moment lasts forever, nor is there ever only one way of seeing reality. By embracing the continuous flow of “Thiên Di” – the act of moving, shifting, and moving on, we free ourselves from the constraints of attachment. We may still yearn, love, and cherish, but no longer feel the need to hold on to everything in a fixed form or predetermined outcome. And when things inevitably shift and depart, we can embrace change as a natural law of life, opening ourselves to new experiences and memories as they continue to unfold.

NOIRFOTOCONTEST AS A FOUNDATION, AND "THIÊN DI" AS A MILESTONE

Launched in 2020 and now in its seventh season, Noirfotocontest represents a long-term commitment by Noirfoto: a platform for discovering emerging talent and continuing to support artists as they build lasting careers.

Winning an award at Noirfotocontest2025 is only the beginning. Following the exhibitions presented after each season of Noirfotocontest, “Thien Di” is more than a personal milestone for Cas. It also stands as a testament to Noirfoto Gallery’s structured approach to artist development – a space where potential is nurtured, given the opportunity to grow, and ultimately flourish over the long term.

THE BEAUTY OF FINITUDE IN A WORLD OF CONSTANT CHANGE

Through the language of black and white, the boundaries between light and shadow traced by sunlight across surfaces resonated deeply with Cas, leading her to recognise that each person’s sense of self is inherently woven from the interplay between light and darkness.

Within the ever-changing rhythm of the world, light and darkness have always existed as opposing forces. Yet through Cas’s lens, they do not struggle against or erase one another. Instead, they move in relation to each other, each sustaining the other: light defines form, while darkness gives depth to existence. Through this interplay, she came to understand that no form can remain unchanged forever.

The recurring presence of cast shadows in Cas’s photographs therefore does not arise from a deliberate search for them. She simply receives them as moments of serendipity, when a trace of sunlight quietly lingers on a plaster wall, a wooden beam, or a window frame. Here, a shadow is no longer a mere replica of reality, but an independent form of existence. Each time the light shifts, the shadows of objects transform with it. “Everything in life is constantly changing”; a cast shadow may exist only for an instant, yet within that brief existence, it still possesses a form of its own – free and complete.

The human figure in Cas’s work also emerges in a distinctive way: never directly, but through the traces people leave behind in everyday life. Amid the continual flow of change, every existence will eventually depart; yet memory and affection remain imprinted on the objects people have touched and the spaces they have inhabited. The absence of the human figure in Cas’s work thus preserves the most beautiful part of finitude: even when a person or a moment disappears into the void, their presence was once whole and fully present.

WHEN MOMENT TAKES FORM

Like pages of an open diary, each photograph, accompanied by the artist’s handwritten signature, becomes a personal record, preserving moments and milestones along her journey. Within each work, the past is gently cherished and allowed to remain, so that seemingly fragile glimpses are not only preserved in a new form, but also continue to accompany us through the years.

CLOSING NOTE

When we are open enough to step forward, sensitive enough to pause, and free enough to love the world through our own personal lens, familiar fragments of everyday life can reveal themselves in endlessly new ways. And then we may realise that although all things change and eventually dissolve into time, their finitude is not a cause for regret, but precisely what makes each moment so precious.
