Oud ! The oriental guitar with its big belly, roundy, magical sound… Just a few ouds, because I am not a big connaisseur of classical oud even if i do understand that the traditions are huuuuge: they talk about the school of Bagdad, of Tunis, of Algier etc… everywhere where classical arabo-andalusian and arabo-oriental music was developed (North-Africa/Maghreb, Middle-East/Machrek, Spain, Turkey and the Arabic Peninsula).
Here are a few things I know about some artists you’ll hear tonight:
ANOUAR BRAHEM (tunisian), whose got a sensual touch, DHAFER YOUSSEF (another tunisian) with a more spiritual touch and RABIH ABOU KHALIL (lebannon) who composed superb pieces of modern classical arab music. All of them opened the oud to a whole new world in collaborating with a lot of different musicians, like Brahem and Abou Khalil or in having a peculiar and personal use, like Youssef. All of their albums/project are real ear treats and need to be listened from A to Z. You’ll hear also a refreshing algero-tunisian duo called DUOUD who brings the instrument to unexpected places, on their own or in collaboration with ABDULATIF YAGOUB from Yemen. The tradition of oud goes as far as Egypt (ABDEL GADIR SALIM) and Sudan : you’ll hear the great HAMZA EL DIN and a modern cover of him by the lebanese BACHAR MAL-KHALIFE (the pianist, son of a famous oud master). I didn’t resist so you’ll hear also some medieval music. From Spain, EDUARDO PANIAGUA, a spanish architect and musician, specialist of sacred and profane medieval spanish music, including arabo-andalusian music. He’s a virtuoso multi-instrumentist. He recorded dozens of superb albums. And from Turkey with the incredible band HESPERION XXI (lead by the spanish multi-instrumentist JORDI SAVALL) playing medieval Mediterranean musics. You’ll hear also the French THIERRY « TITI » ROBIN another great composer, influenced by Mediterranean, oriental and gipsy musics.
