Arirang Saigon @ The Opera House

From the organizer: A Korean dance performance titled “Arirang Saigon,” which is based on the East Asian country’s “Arirang” music ground, will be held at 7:30 pm on December 1 at the Saigon Opera House.

The show, jointly held by the city’s Union of Friendship Organizations and the Ho Chi Minh City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera, will feature a performance by the Mulmatdol dance troupe, as well as their Vietnamese counterparts.

“Arirang,” a hallmark Korean folk song, boasts different versions in varied areas, which all highlight the common thread of separation and waiting.

The upcoming “Arirang Saigon” show will include dances choreographed by Chun Yoo Oh, who worked at Seowon University as a professor in the dance department from 1991 to 2004 and is now living in Ho Chi Minh City.

The works, performed against the different “Arirang” music background, accentuate the lives of women, especially those of Vietnamese and Korean mothers in the past.

During 10 years of living in the southern Vietnamese city, Chun Yoo Oh realized that the Saigon River has the same love as the Korean “Arirang.”

“Saigon Arirang,” written and directed by Jung Sun Gu, is an attempt to showcase the Korean tune to Vietnamese people.

Another highlight is the fusion of the traditional music performed on Korean flutes and drums and Vietnamese monochords with dance.

Vietnamese monochord artist Le Hoai Phuong, who graduated from the Korea National University of Arts and studied for a PhD in Percussion Instruments at Han Yang University, will also perform at the event.

Chun currently works as a sales director in Ho Chi Minh City. She wrote these works over a long time period and cooperated with versatile dancers to prep for the show.

Ticket prices range from VND80,000 to 400,000 (US$3.77-18.87).
