 International film festivals are responsible for helping the world discover some of the greatest breakout directors in Asian cinema. From Tran Anh Hung to Wong Kar-Wai, film festivals are the perfect platform to showcase locally made films to an international audience. Join us for a special talk with Berlinale - Berlin International Film Festival Programmer, Jon Badalu, and CAAMFest Director, Masashi Niwano, as they discuss their festivals and the process of submitting your films to international film festivals.

The informal talk will be followed by a special screening of the acclaimed Singaporean film, "Ilo Ilo", which world premiered at Cannes in 2013 and was awarded the Caméra d'Or award at the festival. The panel will be conducted in English but any questions can be asked in Vietnamese and translated. The film will also only have English subtitles. SPEAKER BIOS:
JOHN BADALU is one of the founders of Q! Film Festival in Indonesia in 2002 – the first ever controversial queer film festival in the predominantly muslim country. He has co-produced a few films like PARTS OF THE HEART (Paul Agusta, 2012, premiered in Rotterdam), PECULIAR VACATION AND OTHER ILLNESSES (Yosep Anggi Noen, 2012, premiered at Filmmakers of The Present Competition in Locarno Film Festival) and WHAT THEY DON’T TALK ABOUT WHEN THEY TALK ABOUT LOVE (Mouly Surya, 2013, Premiered at World Dramatic Competition at Sundance Film Festival). He works as a Festival Delegate for Berlin International Film Festival, Shanghai Film Festival and Black Night Film Festival in Talinn, Estonia.

MASASHI NIWANO is the Festival & Exhibition Director for the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM)/CAAMFest. CAAMFest is presented every March in the San Francisco Bay Area in the United States as the nation’s largest showcase for new Asian American and Asian film. He is a Bay Area native who holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Film Production from San Francisco State University. Masashi has been associated with CAAM for almost a decade, starting as an intern, then becoming involved in theater operations and, finally, being chosen as a selected filmmaker (Falling Stars, 2006). Prior to re-joining CAAM as Festival & Exhibition Director, Masashi was the Executive Director for the Austin Asian American Film Festival. He is also an active filmmaker, who has worked on numerous films and music videos that are official selections at Outfest, Newfest & South By Southwest.

SINGAPORE, 2013, 99 minutes, English subtitles
A hardworking mother (Yann Yann Yeo) becomes jealous of her rambunctious son's (Koh Jia Ler) close bond with his nanny (Angela Bayani). Ilo Ilo is the debut feature of director Anthony Chen and first premiered at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival as part of the Directors' Fortnight on 19 May 2013. At the festival, the film was awarded the Caméra d'Or award, thus becoming the first Singaporean feature film to win an award at the Cannes Film Festival. The film was selected as the Singaporean entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards.
