Saigon Makeover, organized by Global Shapers Ho Chi Minh City, is a design competition that encourages anyone who loves Ho Chi Minh City (aka Saigon) to use their creative skills to transform the city. Participants are welcome to share their creative vision of how different corners of Ho Chi Minh City can be beautified.

The theme of Saigon Makeover 2016 design contest is THE CHILDREN’S CITY. Entries will be judged based on 5 main criteria:
- ORIGINALITY: Is the concept original?
- AESTHETIC: Is the concept visually pleasant?
- CREATIVITY: What makes your concept different and/or better from the status quo?
- IMPACT: What is the benefit/impact that your concept has on the city and its children?
- FEASIBILITY: Is it feasible to transform the idea into reality?
II. Project Objectives
- Inspire the youth to create professional and applicable artworks that create beautiful experiences to children, as well as bring new visual perspectives to the streets and landscape of Ho Chi Minh City
- Create a collection of artworks that increase the understanding of people about construction, urban planning and development so that the future generation will be able to live in a high-standard environment which fulfills 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
- Look for funding from potential investors as well as support from related constituencies to implement these ideas
- Scalable frameworks that could be implemented and applied in other cities
III. Target Audience
- Anyone who loves Saigon and has interests in design/art.
- The contest is open to individual as well as team participants.
IV. Contest Timeline
1) Round 1: Idea Proposals (Deadline: 23rd April, 2016)
- Participants will submit a design proposal of a chosen location. This can be inspired from the prior series of workshops organised by Saigon Makeover, the city’s rich history, or any personal stories that the designer has for a particular place in Ho Chi Minh City. Using their favourite design/art tools, participants will make a realistic-looking child-friendly design.
- Submission will include:
- an original picture of the scene
- a post-designed picture
- a short description (max. 300 words) about the design, explaining why it is an improvement to Saigon and children’s experiences
- contestant’s profile, including full name, age, place of residence, occupation, email, contact number, and his/her facebook link (non-mandatory)
- To submit the entry, contestants must register via: bit.ly/registerSM2016 and the entries will be sent via email to saigonmakeover.
info@gmail.com. - 20 best submissions will be selected by panel of notable experts from art-related industries into Round 2, based on 5 criteria: Originality, Aesthetic, Creativity, Impact and Feasibility.
2) Round 2: Refining ideas (Deadline: 28th May, 2016)
- Finalists would then receive supports from the team through customised workshops and meetings with art experts to get advices/tutorials in order to further improve their designs.
- Submission will include:
- the original picture of the scene
- the refined artwork, will be collected in piece(s)
- a short description (max. 500 words) about the design, explaining why it’s an improvement to Saigon and children’s experiences, as well as why it is an improvement from the previous version.
3) Exhibition & Award Ceremony
- Exhibition will be held from June 1 to June 3, open to public. All 20 ideas are displayed.
- Winners will be announced on June 4.
- Prizes:
- 1 Winner: 20 million VND in cash and/or in kind.
- 2 Runner-ups: 10 million VND in cash and/or in kind for each.
V. About the organizer
Saigon Makeover is organized under the Global Shapers Ho Chi Minh City Hub, which was established in 2013 and comprises of 15+ Shapers who are young leaders in their respective fields as well as social contribution, committed to improving the state of the local community.

Participants must own the copyright of the original photo and will continue to own the copyright of the re-designed photo/art work during and after the competition. By entering into the competition, participants grant the Saigon Makeover Organizing Team the right to use their competition entries, and any other material/information submitted with their competition entries or otherwise provided by the participants.
