Vietnamese film seems to be growing by leaps and bounds these days. Whether it's gracing the festival circuit or taking home prestigious awards, the country's film industry is blossoming not only in Vietnam but around the world.

The same potential exists in Nguyen Dinh Quy Anh's directorial debut. The architect-turned-filmmaker's Hai Chú Cháu, or Uncle & Son, debuted at the 2012 YxineFF film festival before going on to play at several festivals in the United States, including Outfest Fusion, Frameline San Francisco and the Vietnamese International Film Festival.
Based on an award-winning short story by Huu Thang, Hai Chú Cháu tells the story of a young boy who lives with his closeted uncle, a tailor, in southern Vietnam. One day, on his way to school, the boy hears other people in the village badmouthing his uncle. Upset by their words, he confronts his uncle, who struggles to explain the situation. In the end, the young boy blames himself and makes a decision that leads them both to more difficult circumstances.
