An American film about a Vietnamese teen has been shortlisted in the Documentary Short Subject category for the 88th Academy Awards.
Chau, Beyond the Lines focuses on a 17-year-old Vietnamese boy who dreams of becoming an artist and clothing designer. Born with a rare disability in his arms and legs as a result of Agent Orange exposure, Chau grows up in a Saigon care center for children affected by Agent Orange, reports Thanh Nien. As you can see in the documentary's trailer, it's not always an environment that encourages him to achieve his dreams.
The 33-minute film, directed by Courtney Marsh, follows Chau over eight years, chronicling his journey into adulthood as he outgrows the care center.
Chau, Beyond the Lines will go up against nine other documentary shorts to first compete for one of the five official nomination slots. If successful, the documentary would then have a spot in the televised Oscar ceremony on February 28, 2016. The category's official five nominations will be announced on January 14, 2016.
Chau, Beyond the Lines also recently won Best Documentary Short Film at November's Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.
