As Saigon waits for its new, massive airport, some of Vietnam’s smaller cities are focusing on renovations rather than starting from scratch. Hue’s Phu Bai airport, which was reopened yesterday after 6 months of repairs and upgrades, falls into this category.
According to Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the VND700 billion renovation was necessary to solidify Hue’s position as a tourism hotspot and center of health and education services.
Key upgrades include the resurfacing and expansion of the airport’s runway from 40m in width to 45m to accommodate medium-sized aircraft such as the A321.
The passenger terminal was expanded to 6,500sq.m which can service 1.5 million passengers per year.
The airport will be served by national flag carrier Viet Nam Airlines and VietJetAir.
