Thua Thien-Hue officials are planning to put a cable car system in the Bach Ma National Park within its territory.
Hoang Viet Trung, deputy director of the Thua Thien-Hue Office of Planning and Investment, shared with VnExpress that the province just completed and submitted a detailed building plan for a resort in the middle of Bach Ma National Park to the Ministry of Construction for assessment.
The project, currently called the Bach Ma Spiritual and Relaxation Ecotourism Resort, will also include a cable car line. According to the plan, the line has three stops including one at Do Quyen Waterfall in the heart of the national park.
However, Trung emphasized that the cable system will not eat into the park’s natural forests.
“In short, the resort will have international standards. It will respect nature while boosting Bach Ma’s development,” he told VnExpress.
The tourism project was greenlit back in 2014, when the province’s People’s Committee agreed to establish a 300-hectare resort in the park. The total investment for the project is VND1.5 trillion (US$66 million). It’s unclear which developer is behind the development.
Cable car is the most controversial means of transport in Vietnam. Earlier this year, Quang Binh administration made headlines for its plan to put a cable car system inside Son Doong Cave, the world’s largest. Local authorities initially denied it after a public outcry and even a high-profile petition against the project. However, a few months later, Quang Binh officials confirmed that the province was indeed seeking developers for the project.
Bach Ma National Park was founded in 1991 with a total area of 37,000 hectares. The ecological site is one of the most biologically diverse natural reserves in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
