The management of a park in Da Nang is seeking permission from local authorities to close a zoo on the park’s grounds due to a scarcity of animals.

According to Tuoi Tre, Deputy Director of the Da Nang Greenery Parks Company, Nguyen Thi Quynh Diem, confirmed that a proposal was submitted to the municipal Department of Construction to seek an agreement on the closing of the zoo located in 29/3 Park.

Diem announced that the closure was deemed necessary as currently there are only 23 animals housed at the facility, and that the company’s ability to run the zoo is limited.

"Hello, it's me, crocodile. I've been wondering if after all these years, you'd like to free me."

The 30-year-old zoo was once home to an array of African animal species, Diem said, but the number of animals living there has continually fallen over the years. At the moment, the park has 12 deers, 8 monkeys, a crocodile, a bearcat and a python.

The zoo's bearcat looks sadder than Ariana Grande's Saigon fans last month.

She explained: "We have tried to save the establishment in several ways, none of which have been successful. The lack of diversity and space has resulted in a declining number of visitors."

According to Tuoi Tre, the living conditions of the animals are also inadequate, which could also be to blame for the low attendance. If the proposal to shut down the park's zoological section is approved, park management plans to turn the area into either a green space or public calisthenics space.

The animals currently living there will be sent to facilities capable of raising them after the zoo closes.
