It’s official: US President Donald Trump will be here this coming November.
According to an official statement issued by the White House, Donald Trump will make his first Asia visit since being elected president. Trump and his wife Melania plan to drop by five countries during their trip, including Vietnam, Japan, Korea, China and the Philippines, reports Reuters.
The couple will stay in Asia from November 3 to 14 in order to attend two major regional summits: the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC) held in Da Nang, Vietnam and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) conclave in the Philippines.
North Korea’s nuclear threat is likely to be on the trip’s agenda in East Asian countries.
“The president’s engagements will strengthen the international resolve to confront the North Korean threat and ensure the complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” the White House statement said.
The White House also added that the president will "emphasize the importance of fair and reciprocal economic ties with America's trade partners."
Vietnam made a formal invitation to the US president back in February, seeking his presence at the Da Nang-based conference. Two months later, this April, Vice President Mike Pence confirmed that Trump would indeed attend APEC, joining heads of state from around the Pacific Rim.
