A recent survey has shown that Vietnamese consumers are the most generous in the Asia-Pacific region when it comes to supporting charities.
VietnamNet reports that the latest Mastercard Ethical Spending and Charitable Giving Survey, released in September, found that 78.5% of Vietnamese respondents give to charities, the highest rate of any country surveyed. This figure grew by 8.7% from the 2015 survey, according to Mastercard's press release on the study.
Vietnam was followed by Thailand at 66.3% and Hong Kong with 60.2%.
The study included 14 nations and territories: Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, with 8,738 individuals polled online last November.
Those surveyed named children's education and health as the most important cause when donating to charities, with 37.8% of respondents choosing it as their top social cause. Local natural disaster relief efforts were the second most-chosen issue at 33.7%, while the subject of poverty and starvation alleviation initiatives was selected as the most vital by 32.1%.
Georgette Tan, senior vice President of Asia-Pacific communications for Mastercard, said in the press release: "As Asia continues to make strong economic headway, we must not forget that the development needs in the region remain pervasive. We are very encouraged by this year's findings, which show that consumers across both developed and emerging markets are doing their part to help those less fortunate and give back to their communities."
She added: "Additionally, with the high value placed on education in Asian culture, it's strongly encouraging to see that children's education and health is the cause that consumers are looking to support."
