BackStories » Vietnam » Hanoi to Spend $76m on Overpass, 2 Underpasses to Help Solve Congestion

Hanoi plans to pour a lot of money into upgrading its infrastructure in the next few years.

As Zing reports, during a recent party meeting on November 19, the Hanoi People’s Committee discussed some of the city’s future road projects until 2020 – which mostly include constructing new overpasses and underpasses – and their dedicated budget.

According to Hanoi authorities, the capital will earmark VND1.73 trillion (US$76 million) to build new road structures, including one overpass and two underpasses.

The overpass will be built at the intersection of Hoang Quoc Viet and Nguyen Van Huyen streets. The latter, also known as Hanoi’s Ring Road No. 2.5, is currently under construction. This project is expected to cost VND500 billion, and will be earmarked from the city budget.

The first underpass is located in Hoang Mai District at the intersection of Giai Phong Street and Ring Road No. 2.5. The new structure will cost VND680 billion.

Lastly, the Le Van Luong Street – Ring Road No. 3 underpass will cost VND550 billion.

All three road improvements are part of Hanoi’s bigger strategy to improve the city’s traffic situation, which is currently riddled with congestion, accidents and noise pollution.

When the projects finish in a few years, Hanoi will have a total of five underpasses, including Trung Hoa, Thanh Xuan, Kim Lien, Long Bien and Giai Phong-Ring Road No. 2.5.
