The garage will be the capital's biggest parking lot.

During a meeting on June 16, chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Duc Chung announced that Hanoi will build its largest underground five-story garage in Quan Ngua stadium, Tuoi Tre reports.

The garage will cover 1.8 hectares of land and is expected to fit 2,500 cars and 5,000 motorbikes.

During the meeting, many raised concerns regarding Hanoi's shortage of static traffic infrastructure, especially parking lots. The People's Committee confirmed that the city acknowledges the problem and is trying to improve it by calling for investment for underground parking projects. According to Chung, so far, Hanoi has succeeded in getting funds dedicated to several projects.

"In Hoan Kiem, investors are looking into various potential locations such as the field in front of Cultural Friendship Palace, the part of the land in front of Thong Nhat park's gate, and in front of Hanoi Opera House. The city is also building more smart parking lots," Chung said.

According to a statistic by Ministry of Transport reported on Bao Hai Quan, as of December 2017, Hanoi has 939 parking lots, 244 of which are unauthorized. Underground parking lots are only placed in shopping malls for private use. This lack of public parking infrastructure has caused some parking lots to jack up their fees three to five times higher than what one usually pays for parking.
