Work Hazards Remain Rife Amid Poor Employee, Business Awareness

This news won't come as a surprise to anyone who has observed a local construction site.

According to Dan Tri, 2018 saw 8,000 work accidents occur nationwide, killing 1,039 people and injuring 7,190 more.

These figures were presented by Nguyen Thanh Do from the Ho Chi Minh City Labor Federation at a recent conference on occupational health and safety risks.

Of last year's 8,000 work accidents, 972 were deadly, an 8.2% increase from 2017, and 112 accidents had more than two victims, a 10.9% jump from the previous year.

Do shared at the conference that many of these incidents were caused by low awareness and ignorance of occupational safety regulations by both employers and employees.

In 24.6% of these accidents, employers didn't provide information on safe work practices, while employees didn't received proper training in 7% of the cases. In another 18.4% of the accidents, employees failed to follow set guidelines.

A representative from the Hanoi Labor Federation said that officials need to launch an awareness campaign on these issues, the news source reports, while another official from the Da Nang federation lamented that his agency doesn't possess the requisite knowledge on labor safety.
