Saigon’s professional basketball team, the Saigon Heat, kicked off the 2014 ASEAN Basketball League season with a decisive victory over the Indonesia Warriors on July 19 at CIS Stadium.
Here’s a brief recap of the game from the team’s website:
Justin Williams had a dream debut with the Heat by posting a monster double-double with 16 points and 21 rebounds. Dustin Scott also contributed 18 points and newcomer David Arnold added 14 points for the Heat who scored 40 points in the paint. Veteran point guard Froilan Baguion had an all-around game as he finished with 13 points, 7 assists and 7 steals.
The inexperience Warriors had a sluggish start as they only shot 25% in the first quarter. Meanwhile, the Heat had more energy to start this game and a corner three from Arnold gave them a 9-4 lead just three minutes after tip-off. With only Tremayne Johnson and Chris Barnes on the scoreboard, the Warriors were behind 16-13 in the first ten minutes.
Williams puts the finishing touches for the Heat in the fourth quarter. With their team leading 21 points, Leo Avenido and Williams gave the fans at CIS a show. Off a Warriors turnover, Avenido throws an off-the-board pass to Justin Williams for the epic two-handed slam that had everyone off their seats.
The Saigon Heat will go head-to-head with Laskar Dreya South Sumatra at home this Saturday.
