A New Year, A New Break In Vietnam’s Undersea Internet Cable

It May Take 1 Month To Fix Undersea Internet Cable: Viettel

Are Sharks To Blame For Vietnam’s Broken Internet Cable?

Viettel said earlier this week that the undersea cable, which was ruptured on January 5, would take three weeks to a month to patch-up.

Though no reason has been given for the cause of the break, some have speculated that sharks, mistaking the cable for a school of fish, were to blame.

FPT Telecom general director, Nguyen Van Khoa has previously faulted the poor design quality of the notoriously unreliable, 20,000km, $560 million cable:

“I must say that the AAG cable system was built to a below-standard technical design, which is the major reason behind its frequent fractures,” he told Tuoi Tre last September.

Since the break occurred, access to websites outside of Vietnam has been a painful exercise.
