Barack Obama Accepts PM Dung’s Invitation to Visit Vietnam

On the sidelines of the ASEAN 27 Summit in Kuala Lumpur on November 21, US President Barack Obama accepted an invitation from his Vietnamese counterpart, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung to visit Vietnam next year.

During his talk with President Obama, PM Dung expressed his wishes to strengthen the bond between the two countries. After commending President Obama’s push to complete Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations, the Prime Minister suggested that the US contribute more to the stability and peace of the region, including East Sea, reports VietnamNet.

According to Zing, President Obama said that he hopes to visit Vietnam in May 2016 which may coincide with his trip to Laos, the first ever for a US President.

During the Obama administration, the United States has managed to improve its relations not only with Laos but also Vietnam and Myanmar, signaling a pivot toward stronger diplomatic ties in the Southeast Asian region.

The last US President to visit Vietnam was George W. Bush in 2006.
