Last weekend, as golfers in the American state of South Carolina were standing on the green of the 18th hole, Boeing flew a surprise visitor over the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) competition: Vietnam Airlines' newest plane.
According to South Carolina newspaper The Post and Courier, the flyover has become an annual event in recent years. Boeing, which owns a manufacturing facility just up the road from the golf course where the competition was held, shows off its aircraft with a quick pass over the PGA event. This year, the plane in question was a Boeing 787 Dreamliner for Vietnam Airlines which is set to be delivered later this month.
It seems, however, that no one informed the commentators at CBS Sports. Pro golfer-turned-commentator Nick Faldo, the man who designed Laguna Lang Co's golf course, apparently hit the deck at the sight of the low-flying aircraft.
While this aircraft is likely to be put to good use, Vietnam Airlines recently announced a plan to sell two of its Boeing aircraft as well as three Airbus A350s, which the company will then lease back. Airline representatives say the move is an effort at debt control.
