Vietnam to Fine Drivers Using Mobile Phones

Starting August 1, drivers in Vietnam will be fined for using their mobile phones while on the road.

Following Vietnam's signature of the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, the national government is stepping up its penalties on driving violations, including cell phone usage on the road, reports Tuoi Tre.

By the end of this summer, law enforcement officials will be able to fine drivers using their mobile phones between VND600,000 and VND800,000 for the infraction.

Other new penalties include heavier fines for drunk driving, which will now carry a penalty of up to VND4 million and a three-month license suspension for motorbike drivers or VND18 million and a six-month license suspension for car drivers.
