Though the consistency of Vietnam's internet connection has been strong recently, the country’s internet speeds will decrease this week as its submarine cable undergoes maintenance work.
According to ICT News, the Asia-America Gateway (AAG) cable system will be running at slow speeds for six days, from June 22 to June 27, during which all major telecommunications providers will be affected.
Vietnam began using the AAG to connect its internet users in late 2009. The cable, which spans 20,000 kilometers and links Southeast Asia with the United States, broke twice in 2014 and three times in 2015. The US$560 million system is a joint venture among 19 partners, including Vietnam’s Viettel, VNPT, FPT and STP.
Given the routine issues with the AAG connection, Vietnamese companies are currently exploring three additional undersea cables to ensure better performance.
