A Hanoi policeman has been temporarily suspended after kicking a motorbike in traffic.
The officer, whose name has not been released, was captured on camera kicking the vehicle of 20-year-old driver Nguyen Van Tuan, who had violated traffic laws, reports Thanh Nien. The motorist was spotted driving the wrong way up the street without a helmet.
In the video, filmed on a dashboard camera, the officer wades through traffic on Hanoi’s Xa Dan Street, attempting to thwart Tuan, who had failed to stop after being signaled by police. He then kicks the motorbike as it passes by, sending Tuan and his female passenger crashing into a median.
According to Lieutenant-Colonel Le Tu, chief of Traffic Police Division No. 3, the incident took place on Monday afternoon. Lt. Col. Tu also claims the crash was the fault of the driver and not the policeman, reports Zing.
Authorities have fined Tuan VND2 million for the traffic violations and impounded his vehicle for 30 days. Meanwhile, Senior Lieutenant-Colonel Dinh Thanh Thao, deputy chief of Hanoi’s traffic police, told the media he would be launching an investigation into the incident.
“We will strictly punish any officer with wrongdoings,” he said, according to Thanh Nien.
