Local Man Steals Cop Car, Joyrides to Bien Hoa

This week was off to a strange start, what with snow blanketing northern Vietnam and Nghe An and Isaac Newton's brief stint as a Vietnamese alchemist.

But while the north was busy handling its Wikipedia trolls and freezing weather, southern Vietnam had its own fiasco to deal with after a local man stole a police car early on Monday morning.

According to Thanh Nien, 30-year-old Le Van Giap took a joyride in a cop car around midnight on Monday morning, hopping in the parked vehicle on Hanoi Highway and speeding off in the direction of Bien Hoa.

Several officers on motorbikes pursued Giap in the car, chasing him as he crashed into a concrete barrier near Dong Nai Bridge and eventually apprehending the culprit at Bien Hoa's Vung Tau intersection, where he hit another barrier, causing the car to get a flat tire.

We'll let Thanh Nien take it from here: “[Police] said Giap was very drunk and slept for many hours at the police station. When Giap sobered up, he told the police that he mistakenly drove the police car because he was so drunk.”

The moral of the story here: If you're going to joyride, don't do it in a cop car. For the sake of everyone's safety, we're hoping it was a high-speed chase like this one.
