In an effort to improve ties with Vietnam, US President Donald Trump recently wrote a letter to Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang.
At a meeting with US Ambassador Ted Osius on March 31, Quang shared that the letter affirms "[President Trump]'s wishes to promote cooperation on economics, trade, regional and international issues;" Reuters quotes a government website.
Such ties are in line with those of Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama, who visited Vietnam in 2016 and oversaw the lifting of a decades-old arms ban and a closer cooperation with US companies, even though Trump already nixed the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
At the meeting with Ambassador Osius, Quang also expressed Vietnam’s desire to work more closely with the US and its neighbors to maintain freedom of navigation and aviation in the region.
The US Ambassador to Vietnam then informed Quang that Trump is considering participating in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, which will take place in Da Nang this November, Reuters reports.
