The capital's main stadium is part of a new list from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
In a recent feature on their website, the AFC highlighted five iconic stadiums from the region, all of which currently lie dormant due to the coronavirus pandemic.
My Dinh was named alongside Stadium Australia in Sydney, Jakarta's Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Malaysia's National Stadium, and Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok.
"Asia has some of the best stadiums in the world, iconic venues which regularly see thousands of fans filling the stands to cheer on their favorite teams," the article states. "As we await the return of those heady nights, [we] present some of the best stadiums in Asia, starting with five of the most iconic in the ASEAN region."
My Dinh, the focal point of the National Sports Complex in Hanoi, opened on September 2, 2003, and has hosted a number of momentous sporting events in the years since. It was the main venue for the 2003 SEA Games and also hosted the 2007 AFC Asian Cup.
In 2018, Vietnam beat Malaysia at My Dinh to win the AFF Cup, and the facility has also welcomed adoring football fans to watch the national teams play abroad on huge screens.
Given the incredible success of Vietnam's men's and women's soccer clubs in recent years, it's safe to say that My Dinh hasn't seen the last of uproarious celebrations, but at the moment there is no telling when those squads will return to the pitch.
In the meantime, the stadium is set to receive US$6.4 million in upgrades later this year as Hanoi prepares to host the 31st SEA Games next year.
