6 Vietnamese Films to Play at Osaka Asian Film Festival

A total of six Vietnamese feature films will play at Osaka's Asian Film Festival, held from March 4-13.

Titled “Vietnamese Cinema in Bloom”, the country's burgeoning film industry earned a section all its own at this year's event. The Vietnamese films to be screened include Phan Dang Di's Big Father, Small Father and Other Stories, which will hit theaters in Vietnam this summer, Nguyen Hoang Diep's award-winning Flapping in the Middle of Nowhere and domestic blockbuster Sweet 20 by Phan Gia Nhat Linh, the local remake of a Korean film, which beat out Star Wars at the Vietnamese box office late last year.

Two of Nguyen Quang Dung's films, The Lady Assassin and Super X, will also play at the festival along with Victor Vu's Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass, which dazzled audiences both at home and abroad.

Beyond these films, the Osaka Asian Film Festival will also feature a 13-film competition section, a series of "Special Screenings" films and various smaller sections showcasing Asian cinema from around the continent.

With several film festival premieres and international accolades under its belt, the Vietnamese film industry is charging full speed ahead into 2016. In addition to the spate of Vietnamese films playing at the 11th annual event, much-hyped new films such as Ngo Thanh Van's Tam Cam: The Untold Story, Bao Gio Co Yeu Nhau by Dustin Nguyen and Chase, directed by Cuong Ngo and starring actress Truong Ngoc Anh, will hit theaters later this year, drawing moviegoers to the cinema with increasingly local films.
