Over a month after its debut, Toi Thay Hoa Vang Tren Co Xanh (Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass) – the stunning, state-commissioned film by Vietnamese-American director Victor Vu – continues to rake in steady ticket sales and win over audiences across Vietnam.
Now, according to the Hollywood Reporter, the coming-of-age story has become Vietnam's highest-grossing drama of all time.
In early October, Toi Thay Hoa Vang Tren Co Xanh debuted to eager Vietnamese audiences, drawing 350,000 viewers to their local theaters on opening weekend and pulling in US$1 million. It was the third largest opening weekend of any Vietnamese film.
Since then, Toi Thay Hoa Vang Tren Co Xanh has grossed US$3.5 million, a serious figure in the Vietnamese film industry. With the film still playing in select theaters across the country, Vu's latest is expected to break the US$4 million mark. If so, it would become the second-highest grossing local film of any genre.
In addition to drawing a generous Vietnamese audience, Toi Thay Hoa Vang Tren Co Xanh was screened at the American Film Market last Sunday, hinting that there may be international potential for the film, which is based on Nguyen Nhat Anh's novel of the same name. The film already collected an award as one of the Feature Films of 2015 at Silk Road International Film Festival earlier this year.
