After airing five episodes of “Sex and the City” last month Vietnam Television (VTV) has abruptly pulled the show from its lineup.
The Emmy-winning show debuted on the network’s educational channel, VTV2 in November but Ha Nam, head of VTV’s editorial board, confirmed that it had been pulled without giving an explanation, reports Tuoi Tre.
“Sex and the City” was part of VTV’s 18+ film program and though it was intended for adult audiences, “culturally inappropriate” scenes and episodes were said to be on the censor’s chopping block.
When the network announced in October that it would be airing the series, local film directors, producers, scriptwriters, lawyers, and psychologists disagreed with the move while supporters said that the show, which came on at 11pm, helped to promote sex education which is notoriously poor in Vietnam.
Others felt it would have the opposite effect, stating that it would “actually arouse young people’s curiosity and provoke their sexual lust.”
Nam said that there is currently no plan to put Miranda and her appletinis back on the air. [Tuoi Tre]
