“Employed Identity” is a new web series created by Vietnamese American director, Bao Nguyen, for the Center for Asian American Media and PBS.
The five episode series explores the experience of Vietnamese abroad returning to Vietnam, the country of their parents’ birth, to find both themselves and successful careers.
“As a Vietnamese American filmmaker, this phenomenon was an important one that I wanted to tell because it was a different perspective on the Vietnamese overseas perspective. For people living in Vietnam, it may not be surprising to hear these stories because they meet and interact with "Viet Kieu" in their everyday lives but for an outsider, the idea of Vietnam is through a very narrow lens in most cases. By no means is "Employed Identity" meant to be a comprehensive take on the Viet Kieu experience in Vietnam but add to the continuing narrative and conversation about Vietnam,” Nguyen told us.
