Saigon Announces Plan for 150-Hectare Multi-Purpose Park in D12

The park will be located in Thanh Xuan and Thoi An wards.

In an effort to increase green space in the city, the HCMC People’s Committee will turn an area of 150 hectares into a multi-purpose park, Zing reports. When finished, the park will provide for visitors, public activities and other entertainment purposes.

The park will also be utilized for water management, serving as a clean water reserve for the surrounding area.

City authorities have been voicing concerns about how the disappointing state of green space in Saigon compared to the country’s positive economic development. Statistics from the Department of Construction show that at the end of 2018, the city had 369 public and private parks covering over 490 hectares of land. However, these parks aren’t distributed evenly.

On paper, Saigon is planned to have on average 6–7 square meters of green space per inhabitant, but as of the end of 2018, the city has in total 491.16 hectares of park land, amounting to only 0.49 square meters per person.

An example cited by the news source is that there are currently eight districts that don’t have a single park within their borders. These districts include districts 9 and 12, as well as Thu Duc, Binh Tan, Nha Be and Hoc Mon. Most parks are still concentrated in urban and central districts, though areas on the outskirts of the city and newer districts have more space for them.
