Legacies Library & The Stimson Center Present: Last Days of the Mighty Mekong

For it’s one-year anniversary, Legacies Library and The Stimson Center are hosting an online conversation with Brian Eyler, author of Last Days of the Mighty Mekong. Eyler is the senior fellow and director of Energy, Water, and Sustainability in Southeast Asia at The Stimson Center and chair of their War Legacy Working Group.

The Mekong River has been the lifeblood of Southeast Asia for centuries and is home to 70 million people across six countries. Eyler’s book explores the economic, cultural, and environmental impact of development and tourism along the Mekong.

He presents complex questions about the balance between preservation and economic development–and how powerful nations like China are impacting downriver neighbors in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

Eyler was recently interviewed on NBC Nightly News and was co-lead of the Mekong Dam Monitor, the winner of 2021 Esri Special Achievement in GIS Award, 1st Prize in the 2021 Prudence Foundation’s Disaster Tech Competition, and the Renewable Natural Resources Foundation’s 2021 Outstanding Achievement Award.
