Stories From The Edge Of The Sea @ Fulbright University Vietnam

Andrew Lam is a Vietnamese American journalist and writer. He was born in South Vietnam, where he led a privileged life as the son of General Lâm Quang Thi of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam and left Vietnam at age of 11. He attended the University of California, Berkeley where he majored in biochemistry.

The author of 4 books, including his memoir "Perfume Dreams: Reflections on the Vietnamese Diaspora," which won the Pen Beyond Margin Awards, Birds of Paradise Lost, a collection of short stories, which won the Josephine Miles Literary award in 2013. His latest book, "Stories from the Edge of the Sea," exploring love and heart breaks among Vietnamese Americans' lives, was published in March of 2025. Lam's essays and short stories are taught widely in America. He is working on a novel.

Andrew Lam will talk about the creation of his latest work, Stories from the Edge of the Sea, and the beauty of the short story form, how he fell in love with it, and what it takes to create a believable, well rounded character in fiction.

Vinh Phu Pham, Ph.D. is an artist, literary scholar, and cultural critic based in New York City. His writing covers Vietnamese contemporary art, the musical legacies of the Republic of Vietnam, and Asian American literature in diaspora. He has a background in 19th-century Spanish Peninsular literature, the literature of the Spanish Philippines, and Vietnamese francophone literature. Currently, he serves as assistant professor of World Literature at Bard High School Early College (Queens).
