Georg Whelan is an Australian artist based in Hanoi. Through expressive figurative painting, film photography, drawing and text, he studies the banal to the extraordinary. His work observes daily rituals, constructed narratives and dichotomies, referencing a broad spectrum of sources from historical figures to bathroom graffiti. Bringing these elements together - the result is vibrant, elegantly surreal and at times a bit vulgar.
Georg’s recent works examine the rich and complex history of Vietnam; encapsulating both the traditional Chinese and colonial influences that parallel and have a unique overlay. Whether looking at the eclectic building styles, the blend of nature and man-made, ornamental elements that demonstrate beliefs, or the general discourses that exist in modern day Vietnam.
