Vietnam’s Skilled Workers Are Moving Overseas for Better Opportunities: Report

While Vietnam’s skilled workers are heading overseas to find work, foreign experts have found Vietnam a good location for career development.

According to a recent survey by Jobstreet, the majority of skilled Vietnamese workers leaving the country are going after opportunities in neighboring countries, reports VnExpress. Specifically, 80% of these workers head to Singapore for employment, while another 12% relocate to either Malaysia or the Philippines.

The reason for this brain drain, according to Jobstreet, is low salaries. On average, Vietnam’s skilled workers earn US$350-850 a month, a full six times less than their counterparts in Singapore, three times less than those in Malaysia, and 1.5 times less than those in the Philippines, according to the local news outlet.

On the other hand, however, opportunities and competitive salaries abound for foreign senior executives in Vietnam. A recent report by HSBC named the country Southeast Asia’s second most appealing destination for foreign experts, according to VnExpress.

The same report also found that foreign experts take home, on average, an annual salary of US$103,000, and 35% of survey respondents earn more in Vietnam than in their home countries.
