[Photos] Historic Crowds Hit Hanoi Downtown to Celebrate New Year

Aren’t you glad that you stayed at home this New Year’s Eve?

Last weekend, the world bid farewell to 2017 to welcome a new year. Residents of Vietnam’s major metropolises also hit the road to revel in the festive spirit and judging by this set of photos by Zing, Hanoians really went all out.

According to the online news source, streets like Hang Gai, Cau Go, Le Thai To and the Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square were filled to the brim with thousands of revelers. Unlike Saigon and Da Nang, capital authorities didn’t make use of fireworks to celebrate the New Year, but locals still nonetheless poured into Hanoi’s public spaces.

In order to enjoy a music concert, some even made use of trees and dangerously perched themselves on the roofs of local homes. This was probably the first time that this many Vietnamese have celebrated the occasion – called Tet Duong Lich, or western tết, by locals – at the same time.

Have a look at Hanoi’s historic crowd last weekend:
