A VietJet flight was delayed for over 3 hours yesterday morning after a passenger joked that he had a bomb in his carry-on bag.

According to Tuoi Tre, Flight VJ8571 was scheduled to depart at 6:50am from Hanoi’s Noi Bai Airport bound for the central province of Khanh Hoa.

The poorly timed humour struck when an attendant was checking the boarding pass of a Hanoi man who said that his carry-on bag contained a bomb. When asked to repeat his statement, the man responded with the same “joke.”

After being informed of the incident, the pilot aborted the flight and contacted security officers who didn’t find any explosive device.

The flight eventually departed at 10:00am without the jokester, who was fined VND50 million.

A similar incident occurred in March where a passenger made a similar comment. He was also fined and given a six-month flight ban.
