BackStories » Vietnam » Northern Vietnam Braces Once Again for Heavy Rain, Potential Flooding

The rainy season is upon us once again, and northern Vietnam is about to experience a bout heavy rainfall.

The capital is in the crosshairs of a low-pressure storm system currently heading inbound from the Gulf of Tonkin, with torrential rain and high winds likely to affect large areas of northern Vietnam, Dan Tri reports.

During a series of heavy rainstorms in late June, the northern provinces of Lai Chau and Ha Giang endured flash floods and landslides that killed over 20 people and caused property damage worth millions of dollars.

Authorities in provinces such as Thanh Hoa and Quang Binh have been urged by the government to prepare extensively to prevent further natural disasters this week.

It's possible that some streets in downtown Hanoi may flood if drainage systems are overwhelmed. Traffic in the north-central province of Nghe An was reportedly brought to a standstill in several areas as downpours lashed the region yesterday.

The storm system made landfall in northern Vietnam this afternoon and will linger over the region until tomorrow evening at the earliest. Meteorologists say the rain will be heaviest in the evening.
