Dried squid is by nature a bit tough to chew, but authorities in Hanoi knew something was amiss when they inspected 2 metric tons “squid” on its way to HCMC.

Yesterday, the Hanoi economic police opened one of the 38 sacks to find that the product was made of a elastic substance which smelled of burnt rubber when put to a flame, reports Tuoi Tre.

Officers also uncovered 12,000 boxes of unmarked medicines with labels in Chinese characters that were missing paperwork.

After testing the “squid” at the Institute of Crime Science under the Ministry of Public Security, it was found that only 30.6% of the products were made from real squid, while the remaining 69.4 % were of unidentified materials.
