A recent announcement by the Directorate for Roads of Vietnam (DRVN) concerning driving licenses will have a significant impact for both Vietnamese and foreign drivers in Vietnam.
To better “strengthen the nation’s commitment to road safety,” the DRVN has announced that starting in 2015, it will begin to issue international driving licenses to Vietnamese visiting foreign lands while simultaneously recognizing licenses issued by foreign countries, reports Vietnam Net.
Back in 1968 the country ratified the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic which “calls for governments to implement policies and practices that would reduce road-crash risks.”
Nguyen Van Quyen, deputy head of the DRVN, said that this new policy is a step forward towards further integration with the rest of the world.
While it’s a bit unclear how Vietnam will treat foreign licenses (will a car license allow you to drive a motorbike or motorcycle? Will it apply to sea sponges?), this should address some long-standing issues relating to foreign drivers in Vietnam.
